The past few years I've been thinking a lot about humankind as a species. How we fit into the Whole...our unique contribution to the awareness of the Universe.

We humans are a relatively young species, and many of us have begun to suspect that we are not "finished" yet. Most other species seem to have found their niche, and so the nagging question remains: "What is our niche?"
We are possessors of extraordinarily large brains, showcasing evolution's latest creation: the frontal cortex. With this addition to the basic mammalian brain design came the unique way we think about ourselves and our life. Homo Sapien-sapien is our self given name - the species that thinks about thinking.

Our brains are capable of processing a thousand inputs per second, yet this amazing " bio-computer" still sits inside our skulls, its full potential unknown. The drive for expanded consciousness ever prods us, as The Thinking Species to discover new ways to "boot up" our bio-computer.

And we have the unique privilege of being that part of the Universe that looks at itself in this thinking fashion. We study the unfathomable Universe and the unfathomable quantum particle. And because we are living stardust, (all matter is made up of exploded stars) we are the literally the Universe studying Itself.

It's as if we contain all these fabulous programs but don't know how to run the software.

How do we access the dormant programs -- how do we alter and expand our consciousness so that we can be Fully Awake?

Ancient people quickly discovered many paths to expanded consciousness: from morning glory seeds to mushrooms to the purposefully induced bite of the often deadly cobra snake. From yoga to fasting, from transcendental meditation to sleep deprivation to near death experiences, we homo sapiens are ever driven to experience expanded realities. Witness children spinning like dervishes...something deep within us seeks these altered realities... evolution has embedded this desire within our very DNA; the desire to know ourselves!

Ages ago, the Hindus perfected yoga, now popular all over the planet, as a means to achieve expanded awareness and higher consciousness. The ancient Greeks practiced the ergot induced Elusian Mysteries for thousands of years, producing some of the greatest philosophic and humanistic ideals of today's Western Civilization. The Huichol Indians native to Mexico still practice the ritual Peyote Ceremony, which is the integral ingredient in producing what many refer to as " An entire tribe of shaman."

Ever since we acquired these big brains, we have become shaman, mystics, philosophers, artists, musicians, and poets. We are compelled to know ourselves.

We need expanded consciousness, because the " normal" reality input is simply not adequate. These highly " filtered" realities evolved in similar fashion for all animals on earth, to facilitate survival in the material world. However, the material world, as quantum physics reveals, is actually made up of energy. We exist, therefore, in a variety of realities. In order to truly know ourselves, to know our place in the Universe, to know our Oneness with all things, we require expansion!


Today, we have access to many different inducers of altered states. From meditation to brain machines, from psychedelics to virtual reality, consciousness expansion as a cultural phenomena has arrived. All over the planet, increasing numbers of people have chosen to dwell in a perpetual state of higher consciousness, as our species slowly begins to learn about itself.

What was once called the "Clear Light" state, we might refer to as Personal Evolution or " Self Realization". In this state, we are beyond our normal consciousness...by light years! For the first time, we can consciously choose our evolution.

We have the means to " reprogram" our biocomputer...and to create the most enjoyable and fulfilling human lifestyle the world has ever known. We are learning to " find our niche", starting with our inner voyages.

What might the fully evolved human be like? Classical Hinduism lists the end results of expanded consciousness as: increased personal power, increased understanding and insight, improvement of life, accelerated learning, transcendence, liberation from ego and space time limits, attainment of " mystical union" - pure experience. In contemporary psychological terms:

" We become larger, greater, stronger, bigger, taller people, and tend to perceive accordingly...this is another way of becoming 'godlike'...we, too, out of Universal understanding would never blame or condemn, or be disappointed or shocked. Our only possible emotions would be pity, charity, kindliness, perhaps sadness or amusement...In the peak experience, such emotions as wonder, awe, reverence, humility, surrender, and even worship before the greatness of the experience are often reported." - Dr. Abraham Maslow
